Are You Ready to "Dig Into Reading"?
Are you ready to "Dig Into Reading"? That's the theme for this year's elementary school age and younger Summer Reading Club, and the theme for middle school ages and up is "Beneath the Surface." The overall theme, if you haven't guessed yet, is underground, which encompasses all kinds of ideas such as caves, fossils, hidden treasure, time capsules, gardening, rocks and the subway, just to name a few. Over the summer, BCPL's branches will be offering a wide variety of exciting programs that are theme related: The Fossil Guy and Dig Those Dinosaurs!
Pre-registration is now open and you can sign up online at www.bcpl.info/summerreading or at your local branch. Club materials will be available for pick-up at branches beginning Monday, June 17.
Summer Reading Club is an important part of preventing "summer reading loss," which occurs when students fail to read over the summer resulting in a loss of the reading skills they've acquired over the past school year. Reading just four to five books over the summer months can contribute significantly to the retention of reading abilities necessary to advance in the following academic year.
Here's how it works: Elementary age and younger participants will receive a game board with 16 activities or spaces. Each time they complete four activities or read four books, they can go to their local branch and get a sticker, and then, when they complete all 16 activities, they can choose a completion prize. This year, BCPL has a variety of books for the birth to 5-year-old age range, and the elementary age participants can choose from four fabulous prizes: a pirate-themed beach ball, a monster projection pen, an LED glow wand or a light-up spinning top. For middle school ages, participants read books and fill out raffle slips indicating which of several raffles they would like to enter. There are several raffle prizes available to win, including gift cards from Best Buy, AMC Theaters and Target, an iPod shuffle and other great prizes.
Children who are not yet old enough to read can still participate. The Read-to-Me Summer Reading Club is for ages birth to 5. This will also be the third year of our Goodreads high school and adult program. More information about that program can be found at: www.bcpl.info/goodreads.
Last year, BCPL shattered records with 48,539 participants, and we're hoping to break that record again this year. Are you ready to "Dig Into Reading"? Read books: win prizes! Sign up at your local branch or register online at www.bcpl.info/summerreading.

"Taste of the Town" a Rousing Success!
At the Perry Hall Branch on Saturday, May 4, more than 300 people had a wonderful time at the 2nd annual "Taste of the Town," an event that benefitted the Foundation for BCPL's early childhood literacy efforts. Guests enjoyed sampling specialties from 19 area restaurants while they listened to the sounds of the New Deal Orchestra. The eclectic silent auction proved to be very popular as well! While we are still tallying the proceeds from this event as of press time, our success wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of our corporate sponsors, restaurant sponsors, silent auction donors and volunteers – we couldn't have done it without each and every one of you!
