  • The Baltimore County technology community is near a concentration of federal scientific and technical laboratories, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and National Institutes of Health. Three technology incubators in the Baltimore area nurture and expand technology-based businesses: techcenter@UMBC [PDF], ALPHA Center at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Research Campus, and the Emerging Technology Center at The Can Company.

     

  • Financing programs sponsored by Baltimore County and the State of Maryland can assist technology businesses in acquiring and improving land, securing buildings and equipment and meet working capital needs. The Baltimore County Advanced Technology Loan Fund complements State and federal financing programs such as the Maryland Industrial Partnership (MIPs) grants, Maryland Venture Capital Trust, Maryland Defense Adjustment Loan Fund and Small Business Innovation (SBIR) grants.

  • Pipeline of Game Talent Maryland game developers find the region’s colleges and universities offer opportunities for learning and teaching. “There's a pipeline of talent coming out of Maryland’s colleges. That’s a real plus for our business,” commented Joe Biglin, COO of BreakAway Ltd. in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
     

  • 58 colleges and universities Maryland’s 58 accredited colleges and universities and 16 community colleges already provide a range of curricula, research and training programs.

     

  • Among the institutions offering multi-media and digital arts programs are the Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), University of Maryland College Park, Towson University, Villa Julie College and Johns Hopkins.
     

  • Specialized Game Studies  and Research The UMBC Training Center is the first East Coast training center for Discreet’s 3D-Game Animation software.
     

  • The University of Baltimore and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) have launched a four-year degree program in multi-media and game development, with options for graduate degrees in advanced interactivity. Baltimore County Public Schools are exploring opportunities through their Career Connections program.
     

  • Researchers at University of Maryland at College Park and UMBC are working to develop advanced solutions through Internet 2, which will broaden the Internet’s technical capacity and launch new interactive applications.

 

  • The University of Maryland Baltimore County ranks fourth among U.S. research universities in the production of IT degrees and certificates, and is the largest producer of such graduates among research universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia.
